Cozy Crime Reads Interview with Trixie Silvertale

What attracted you to the cozy mystery genre?

Mysteries have always engaged my brain, plus I love humor. Many people use humor in their daily lives (to make friends, to cope with stress, and sometimes to keep people at a distance). My novels will always contain humor within their cozy mysteries.

What essential elements make a cozy stand out to you as a reader?

Great characters! I want to be transported to the main character's world – and be their best friend :) Of course, the mystery is important. It has to be engaging, and not TOO easy to solve. I'm a fan of unique furry (or animal of some kind) sidekicks that help solve the mysteries. A quaint setting that draws me in is another item on my checklist.

Do you have a favorite amateur sleuth?

Oh dear! That's like asking a mother to chose her favorite child. I have five cozy mystery series and I love all my sleuths equally... Okay, I think Mitzy Moon is my favorite — but don't tell the others!

What inspired you to write your first cozy mystery?

My introvert personality led me to be a lifelong observer. People watching is a wonderful place to find stories . . . In the end, I felt compelled to share the stories in my head with readers in the real world.

How do you research and create the “cozy” elements in your books, like the settings and community?

Travel! Travel! Travel! I never tire of exploring new places and observing new people. Every place I visit and every experience I have finds its way onto the page — in some form or another.

What is one key step in your writing process that helps you transform an idea into a finished book?

All my books are written via dictation — while I rollerskate. I rollerskate dictate! The body movement helps to turn off the internal critic and allows my imagination to bloom. :)

What advice would you give aspiring cozy mystery authors who want to start writing their first novel?'

Do it! Don't wait for the "perfect" moment or the "perfect" inspiration. I wrote and published THIRTEEN books (that are no longer in print) before I created the Mitzy Moon Mysteries and found my true writing rhythm. You will never get over your fear — do it anyway. Failure is the fastest way to learn, but only if you keep writing. Connect with other authors and find the ones whom you can lean on when you need courage. Write. Write. And rewrite. :)
